Inside Abu Dhabi

A Quick Glance at Abu Dhabi

There are many reasons why you may want to visit Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and a place often toted as being the world’s wealthiest city. Well known for its duty free shopping opportunities and year round sun, the place also has a fascinating culture and a highly glitzy scene. Located on the coast, this city is a modern place with an extremely developed tourist infrastructure and an abundance of things to do.

Weather is something you never have to even worry about in Abu Dhabi, because year round, it is hot and sunny. However, the summer months are extremely hot, and you may want to avoid it at this time. By contrast, in the middle of the ‘winter’, evenings can be pleasantly cool, but it will never get cold. March is perhaps the best time to visit, however, while the climate is bearable for any westerner, and the yearly shopping festival is also on. For those who enjoy sophistication and luxury to the highest degree, Abu Dhabi is a great place to visit, although it will certainly not be cheap. The shopping is famous and too good to resist, so make sure you go with plenty of money if you want to get the most out of place.

Headquarters of one of the wealthiest oil companies in the world, this pulsating city is also famous for its highly futuristic skyscrapers and spectacular modern architecture. However, there is also history here too, since the place was founded 250 years ago. In spite of the age of the settlement, it was not however, until the 1950s that it grew from a fishing village upon the discovery of oil in the location. Nonetheless, it is the extensive gardens and modern architecture that make the city most interesting. Any visit to the city should definitely include the impressive Sheikh Zayed Mosque, one of the largest in the world and only completed in 2007.

For those who are interested in the nature of this area of the world, there is also plenty to do. All around the city are many miles of desert, speckled with idyllic oases. The city itself is built on a kind of island which juts out into the Persian Gulf, mostly constructed on land which has been reclaimed from the sea. This is the area where you can find the long seafront Corniche, well known for its elaborate fountains and extremely luxuriant gardens.

People from all over the world go to Abu Dhabi, either arriving at its modern international airport or seaport. If you are interested in highly impressive shopping opportunities from grand modern shopping centres to Middle Eastern bazaars, Abu Dhabi is definitely the place for you. However, if you want to take a break from the luxury, and also go a little easier on your credit card, you may want to consider a break from the city and a visit into the desert for some camel riding through the dunes and some unique and impressive nature.
